Rainsville and nearby communities were hit
hard by the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak. Thirty three lives were
lost in DeKalb County that day. Hundreds of homes, vehicles, and other
properties were destroyed or
severely damaged.
The Rainsville Chamber of Commerce has had the opportunity to help some
families who suffered heartbreaking loses. The Chamber re-directed
$5,400 it already had on hand to start a storm recovery
fund. Before the original fund was used up in the middle of
August, the Chamber was able to provide direct face-to-face aid for
eight families. Thanks to a couple of
generous contributions, four more families were aided during September.
Food, supplies, furniture, basic building materials, auto tires, and
help paying utility bills -- these were some of the things for which the fund was used.
For many survivors the financial and emotional toll lingers on. The
recovery process will take many more months. There continues to be many
unmet needs especially in the case of single parent families, senior
citizens on fixed incomes, and the un-insured and under-insured.
That is why the Chamber is still accepting donations. Rest assured that 100
percent of any gift will be used to provide direct aid to survivors who may be
short of the cash that they need to purchase much-needed merchandise
and
services.
