Hard work better than luck

Newspaper column for July 9, 2010 edition

Many people consider engineer Ronald Wayne to be an unlucky man. On April 12, 1976, he took an $800 buyout for his stock in a new California company he had co-founded just 12 days earlier. By 1982, that company's sales reached a billion dollars without him. And today, that company is still growing without him.

That company is Apple, which had sales of $42.9 billion in 2009.

In my opinion, luck had nothing to do with Wayne's decision, nor Apple's success. For Apple, which is still growing rapidly in 2010, success has always been a result of intelligent decision making, careful risk evaluation, innovation, and, most of all, hard work.

There are some growing companies right here in DeKalb County that continue to prove it is innovation and hard work, not luck, that takes success to the next level. One of them is our newest member at the Rainsville Chamber of Commerce, Valley View Tube, Inc.

Valley View Tube, on Main Street next door to Plainview Church of God, has turned years of experience into a superior way to manufacture and distribute their goods. They specialize in galvanized steel tubular products and metal roofing, but also offer a wide array of building components and accessories. Carports, storage buildings, pole barn trusses, corral gates and panels, feeders-that is just a few of the products they offer both direct to the public and to their dealer network.

Another company with a success story of its own, Edward Jones, now has over 10,000 offices including a new one in Rainsville. It is located in the new plaza next door to Best Western Rainsville Inn. Financial Advisor Matt Guice is ready to put Edward Jones' proven, long-term strategies to work to help evaluate your financial needs, and reach your financial goals.

This week at the Chamber office I have been working on a new web page for www.rainsville.info where member businesses may share news about what is going on at their store or office. From new products or services, grand openings, job openings, staff promotions and additions, milestones, special offers, coupons-anything our member businesses would like to share-could be found there from time to time. I encourage any interested business to contact me today.
