Remember to vote, mark your calendar
By Tim Eberhart, executive directorRainsville Chamber of Commerce
Newspaper column for May 28, 2010 edition
In 1958, 14 Democrats and one Republican ran for governor of Alabama. John Patterson edged George Wallace in the Democratic primary and went on to become the state 44th governor.
This year we will cast our votes for a new governor in Alabama, plus lieutenant governor, attorney general, three state Supreme Court justices, and several other offices.
Our Chamber of Commerce bylaws restrict my involvement in election politics, but I can encourage you to get out and vote in the primaries on Tuesday.
Since this is my last column for May, and summer is so near, I thought I would encourage you to mark your calendar for some upcoming summertime events. Following are some of the events I will be adding or updating on the Rainsville web site this week.
This Friday is the last Friday of the month, and that means the Mountain Restaurant in Rainsville will have their May Cruise-In. The classic car event will be held on the last Friday night of each month from now through September.
On June 12th, about a mile to the east, there will be the annual Music Fest at The Orchard in Rainsville. That event, a fundraiser to benefit American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, will include musical entertainment by John Stone, Leah Seawright, and Ronnie Osborn’s band Still Kickin.’ A car show will also be featured. Gates open at 10 a.m. and admission is $10 for age 13 and up.
A couple of weeks later, on Saturday, June 26th, two events which are part of the Crossroads Freedom Fest weekend in Rainsville will take place. In the morning you can burn up some pavement in the Freedom 5K Fun Run/Walk. In the evening you can chill out at the car show.
On Sunday, June 27th, the Festival activities at the Rainsville city park will feature performances by area talent, free inflatables for the kids, barbeque plates for sale, and a huge fireworks show.
The stage at the park is currently undergoing renovations that will more than double its size. The event organizers must have something big in the works.
Also mark you calendar for later in the summer when the Northeast Alabama Community College Theatre department presents Steel Magnolias. That will be July 16th-18th, and 23rd-25th.
