Random warm weather thoughts

By Tim Eberhart, executive director

Newspaper column for May 14, 2010 edition

The summer-like weather is luring me to the outdoors like never before. Last week, I ate lunch outside on Tuesday, I rode my bicycle for the first time in over seven months, and I started training for one local event I have been looking forward to a great deal, the second annual Freedom 5K Fun Run. It is now only six weeks away on June 26th.

I will probably walk 3,000 out of the 5,000 meters, but I plan to pre-register for the race right away since the first 250 people to register for the fun run/walk will receive a special-edition dri-fit race shirt and a gift bag with a cap, a water bottle and various other goodies.

The fun run/walk is part of the annual Crossroads Freedom Fest in Rainsville on the weekend before the 4th of July. Fun Run proceeds will help fund a mission trip to New Orleans by a delegation of about 70 workers from Rainsville First Baptist Church.

Most Crossroads Freedom Fest activities, including the big fireworks display and musical entertainment, will be on Sunday, June 27th at the Rainsville city park.

For more information about the Freedom 5K, or the Crossroads Freedom Festival, contact Jerry Clifton at 256-717-5650, or visit rainsvillealabama.com.

During the next several weeks I would like to share information about some of Rainsville’s best kept secrets. For example, downtown Rainsville has an antique shop called Pickled Twice. It is inside Sunshine Cleaners.

Our summer membership drive will start soon. During the next several weeks I would also like to report  the results of the drive in my column.

Believe it or not, there are over three dozen viable businesses in Rainsville that are not Chamber members. If you own or manage one of these businesses, we have you in our sights. It is easy to join and membership rates start at only $85 a year.

At our Chamber board of directors meeting on May 11th, the board amended our dues structure resulting in lower rates for professionals such as healthcare providers, lawyers, insurance agencies, and real estate agencies.
